Mysterious Android version code = configured value plus 2000

If you are building Flutter app and shows app version in-app for users to see (mostly testers). You may run into a weird issue that the version code is different from the configured value. E.g. if you run ` flutter build --build-number=1234 ` it will show up as ` 3234 `, 123 shows up as ` 2123 `... What the hell is happening? flutter.gradle#L864-L876  is the culprit. Basically ` --split-per-abi ` will increase the version code number by 1000, 2000, 3000, etc. as seen above. If you don't want that behavior, just build one single fat APK.

SSL Server T...

Reverse engineering Pubvn apps for fun and... larger-screen-fun

It's Friday night and the wife TM wanted to watch Games of Thrones on the TV (via Chromecast). Should be easy right? We have lots of apps installed for exactly this purpose: Netflix, HBO Now, Flix , etc. None of them worked though... Netflix just doesn't have HBO contents like GoT. HBO Now works but it requires a US proxy to watch and there is no way to tell the Chromecast to go through a proxy. Flix, a promising local app, good with TV streaming but not series. So we had to settle to use HBO Now and Google Chrome's cast tab feature to have it on the big screen. A complicated setup, and slow. The casting was broken a few times during the episode, probably because of wifi interferences. This problem needs some engineering! Proxy Those Apps First order of business would be proxy their apps to catch all network requests. I used Charles  with their iOS app. At first I thought it would be tricky if they use https or certificate pinning but it turned out everything ...

Text Messaging

Many people asked me to use OTT solutions like WhatsApp, Viber, LINE but I quickly uninstall those apps after a while because of two reasons. Firstly, there is no one-thing-fits-all solutions which means you will need to install a bunch of similar apps because different group of people use different service. God, that's tiresome and kills battery. There are decentralized protocols to fix this very issue but they are too good to be true I guess, even Google backed out from supporting XMPP by dropping their Google Talk service. I believe there are companies working on this front right now (or maybe I should?). They should make a solid server implementation AND clients using established standards, big plus if they stick some open source license in their code and publish them all. Provide good user experiences while allow user to control their data and federate between different system as needed. The second reason is backup. No services that I know of provide a way to conveni...

Superuser permission in Play Store

Didn't know the Play Store can display custom permission information. Awesome!

Life's Good

Yep.

When I said vibrate, you should do that

So I upgraded my old-ish P500 to ICS one or two weeks ago. Nothing complicated, step by step below Download the ROM here . The thread specifically mentioned "GEEK ONLY". At the time of this writing, the latest version is beta 4. It's quite solid. Good battery mileage. All fundamental modules are working with the exception of Camera. Reboot into recovery and flash it. Before trying ICS, I used CM7 + CMW so it should be easy. In case you are curious, I was using this ROM . I used version 6.6. Now it's a little out dated but when I tried it, it was the first and the only CM7 ROM for P500.  After the flash, not reading the instruction very carefully, I wiped basically everything and boot it up. OMG IT WORKED. Beautiful home screen and the new overall style. I was quite satisfied. Browsing around for a while then I tried to go to the Market only to realize I have no Google apps installed. This is a common thing so I wasn't surprised so much, just need to grab the...

Sony Ericsson supports FreeXperia team!

In a recent blog post, Sony Ericsson expressed their cooperation with FreeXperia team to help them build a version of CynogenMod for Xperia phones. This is so awesome on so many scales I have never come across any other manufactures support outsiders to build custom firmware for their products. Yes, some (HTC, Sony Ericsson) did provide bootloader unlocking or just like Motorola, they don't lock it at all but sent 20-ish devices for testing? This is so cool! I happen to have an Xperia PLAY. Nice phone. Unlocked and used CM for 2+ months. Not everything works but it's usable as a daily phone. Now I guess they will all work in the next version of CM. Yay!
